COVERED IN LOVE

Covered in Love is a not-for-profit organization created to raise awareness of the mental health realities of children living in the foster care system and to provide them with weighted blankets, which are being successfully used to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD, often eliminating the need for drug therapy.
About

THE REASON

A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS

There is a growing population of vulnerable children in our country who are not able to stand up for themselves, and we believe in using our voices to advocate for and make a difference in their lives.

FOSTER CARE

Children who are in or have been in the foster care system suffer from a wide variety of abandonment issues and stress, resulting in anxiety, depression, insomnia, post traumatic stress disorder, and other related mental health disorders.

Factors contributing to the mental and behavioral health of children and youth in foster care include the history of complex trauma, frequently changing situations and transitions, broken family relationships, inconsistent and inadequate access to mental health services, and the over-prescription of psychotropic medications.

A SOLUTION

WHAT ARE WEIGHTED BLANKETS?

Filled with non-toxic Poly-Pellets, weighted blankets are heavier than standard blankets. Depending on one's age and weight, they range from about 4 to 25 pounds. Generating the same effect as an infant being swaddled to rest, weighted blankets provide therapeutic relief through pressure and sensory input and are very effective as a calming tool or a sleeping aid.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) is a commonly used practice by which pressure is gently applied to the body in order to increase the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate some brain functions. Serotonin is a chemical that is responsible for maintaining mood balance, influencing a variety of body and psychological functions. Serotonin transforms to melatonin, a sleep hormone, which induces sleepiness and helps to maintain sleep throughout the night. Weighted blankets are used to help with sensory regulation, which has been shown to have a calming effect on one's nervous system.
